At our centre there are around 40 staff positions. Our staff have good salaries and benefits, compared to many in this field. They are also very involved and responsible for helping to manage the centre. Because of this, our staff turnover is very low. We have many staff that have been here for 20+ years. This experience, involvement and dedication really shows in the quality of care.
The current Day's Nursery Act requires that there be at least one Early Childhood Educator per program. We recognize the importance of education, so it is our day care's policy to hire all program staff with an Early Childhood Education diploma or equivalent training, recognized by the Ontario Day Nurseries Act. All eligible staff are also members of the College of ECE's.
Our staff are encouraged to keep up to date in the field, by having time and funds available to attend workshops, training, conferences and other professional development opportunities. We also arrange in house training.
A committee comprised of parents and staff conducts all hiring. In keeping with the philosophy of equality, all staff is paid the same, with no increments or differentials.Since 1978, the staff has been represented by the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE 2204).All hiring, grievances, pay and benefits are determined by a collective agreement between the union and the board of directors.
Our day care is also a teaching centre. We provide training to early childhood education students, nursing students and high school coop students.
